The Atlanta Technical College, Institute for Males campus initiative serves to increase the enrollment and retention of males at Atlanta Technical College. This initiative offers post secondary preparation, academic and personal support for current and new students.
Atlanta Technical College Institute for Males is a membership organization serving over 800 males. To become a member of AIM, a student must complete a registration form and an intake process. Upon completing the membership process, a student will receive the following services: counseling, tutoring, student support * (e.g., hardship grants for books, tuition, fees, and transportation), personal development seminars/workshops, professional development seminars/workshops and mentoring.
*To receive a hardship grant, a student must be an active member of AIM for at least one quarter (10-weeks), enrolled in Atlanta Technical College, and in good academic standing. In addition, AIM does not provide GED preparation; we only provide academic tutoring for members who are deficient in their areas of study.
The Institute for Males Recidivism Initiative serves to decrease recidivism through our empowerment program. This program offers postsecondary education engagement to offenders and ex-offenders. The AIM Empowerment Program provides personal development workshops that are designed to empower participants with the self-esteem, leadership, interpersonal skills, financial literacy and career and college information needed to transfer participants from incarceration on to a successful college life and/or professional career. Upon release AIM provides academic support, performance monitoring, professional development, and postsecondary education opportunities.
AIM High School Initiatives
Summer Leadership Camp (SLC) – June 2011 - July 2011, this is a six-week camp that teaches high school students how to become leaders. The camp focuses on discipline, teamwork, respect, and responsibility. The camp participants attend workshops that teach them leadership development, entrepreneurship, healthy lifestyles, career and college exploration and financial literacy. The camp is designed to work with (100) high school each summer. The participants are assigned activities by the facilitators of the workshops that foster interpersonal communications, goal setting, and critical thinking skills. One of the assignments requires that the participants interview various college personnel and students to find out who is the most influential person in their life.
Saturday Academy – September 2010 - May 2011, is a program that teaches high school 11th and 12th grade males how to become leaders within their community. The students will attend a six hour session once a month that focus on Leadership Development, Entrepreneurship, Financial Literacy, and College Preparatory. This program consists of (50) high school students through out the metro Atlanta area. The participants are assigned activities by the workshop facilitator that foster goal setting, dressing for success, creating an operational and marketing plan, budgeting, etc. Workshop materials include Operational Hope’s Financial Literacy curriculum, ScholarShop and The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. Upon completion of the program students will complete a business plan that will be judged by business owners from the community.
High School Leadership Program - September 2010 - May 2011, is a program that teaches high school 11th and 12th grade students to become servant leaders within their community. The participant’s sessions focuses on leadership development, healthy life styles, financial literacy, entrepreneurship and career and college. The leadership program is conducted at three local high schools work with (25) male students per school. The participants are assigned activities by workshop facilitator that foster positive character and ethics traits, being a change agent, planning for college, building relationships, etc. Students attend 2-hour weekly workshops that engage them into critical and analytical, thinking, team building, and problem identification and solving. Upon completion students will have an in-depth understanding on serving others, college and career readiness, and health and social awareness.
